Curia-Minutes-2015-10

Barony of Madrone Curia

Meeting Notes/Minutes for

October 12, 2015

Call to order: 7:12am

B&B Welcome (Baron Stefan of Pembroke/Baroness Emmelina de Coventry)

·      Exciting new thing that we’re working on; more conversation to come; but, let’s get people thinking about this.

·      Start making some plans to be able to put together a joint practice once a quarter or so, basically called a Grand Tournament.

·      Basically, the equestrian Guild has monthly practices; every three to four months, the plan is to schedule that practice at a location where we can have the equestrian and have heavy and rapier fighting. Pavilion to be brought out and set up. Practice for heay, rapier, would also like archery, thrown weapons, and YAC. Equestrian would have a tourney that day (marshal style tourney), rapier and heavy same thing. You enter the tourney, you bring a prize. All day tourneys and picnic in the park for the barony. Dress in garb, hang out in the pavilion, watch fighting, cross-pollination for all the things we do in the Barony. Shooting for March to start. Mistress Annisa says spring and fall so that we are not conflicting with so many events. We expect that we will get a lot of people coming from neighboring baronies; hold small court (so any awards will have to be announced at a later date). Donation box, but no site fee. No suggested donation amount.

o   Sgt. Karrel brings out challenge regarding location. Rafael and Keeriah have identified some potential spots in the Issaquah area. Fall City arena, or Farrell McWhorter Park could be possibilities. Still looking at those logistics.

o   Enzo has gotten permission before from Kirkwood parks to do archery.

o   Iacobo brings up the idea that we might be doing the same thing BAO was doing and stealing big tournouts from their practices. More of a Good Will issue. Baron Stefan points out that this would only be quarterly.

o   The goal is to grow the Barony, support the Barony. It is a practice, not an event, and so there is no financial downside (other than insurance certificate for a new site).

·      We have an event coming up this weekend. And we are looking forward to it.

Seneschal Welcome and Report (HL Luaithrend the Falconer’s Wife)

Only comment deals with A&S, so we will hold that until later in the agenda.

NOTE: Remind His Excellency that any awards given at Night Along the River      Tweed must be announced at Baronial Banquet this weekend.

Exchequer Report (HL Lianor Pereira DoValle)

            September numbers:

            Checking:                    $   5,971.88

            Money Market:          $ 17,643.31

Emprise Money has been deposited. NMS has been paid out and cashed.

Now is the time that we will be reviewing budget for next year. Everyone is under             weapons except for thrown weapons. Will be sending an email out to the barony     regarding where we are this year, what we are looking at for next year, and what     we need to look at. Also no checks written in December.

o   Will be making a modest profit.

·      9/28/15: A Night along the River Tweed (HL Renzo di Venturius)

o   Non-event went well.

o   Had 56 through the door, quite a few from out of Barony.

o   Has not heard of any giant kerfluffles from the event itself.

o   Made $271, which covers just shy of four practices for the site.

New

·      5/2017: May Crown (Baron Stephen des Jardin)

o   It’s a bit early to really start working on this?

o   Has spoken with the Kingdom Events Deputy and said that we will be doing something if there is a group looking out there.

Old Business

None to bring up at this meeting.

New Business

Iacobo brings up the following:

·      Talking to Amtgard about doing a joint event next summer and trying to bring other SCA ad Amtgard groups in on this (Iacobo would co-event steward this)

o   NMS question regarding Amtgard brought up. Iacobo may have to go to the BoD on this.

o   Just as an aside, the BoD may be looking at NMS on EVERY “event,” including fight practices where a site fee is charged.

·      Is there an interest in an Ithra for shooting towards the fall of 2016?

o   It’s been a while since Madrone has put on an Ithra.

o   No format yet, but looking at putting the idea together

o   No real discussion will happen until after 12th Night

o   Suggestion of a Grand Ithra; Iacobo will co-event steward with his co-conspirators (Alicia and Alianora)

o   SQUEE with excitement!

Officer Reports

New officers:

·      Chronicler/Blogger: Iacobo Ibn Daoud

o   Not official yet, but he has put an application in to be the Chronicler. Warrant to be signed at November Curia.

o   We have split off the responsibility to do the minutes of Curia (into a Deputy position)

o   So we are kind of migrating the Chronicler position from being a newsletter to being an on-line blog that will be managed by Iacobo. It will also be a post that other members of the Barony can go to write their own things and post pictures, etc. Iacobo will manage the blog as the Chronicler (and moderate other posts and discussions).

o   We are required to produce a newsletter at least quarterly. Lady Gera has checked to ensure that this format meets the requirements.

o   Looking at weekly “What is Going On in the Barony”; bringing in news from other Kingdoms; looking for awesome content.

Officer positions accepting applications:

·      Gold Key Deputy

·      Rapier Marshal Deputy

Equestrian (Mistress Annisa)

We had a practice at Reber Ranch a week before the Emprise,          which was well-attended. Next practice will be 24th, in Maple             Valley. See the MEG website for details,       madrone.equestrianguild.org.

Pewter (Master Sean O’Conner)

            No report this month.

Archery (Mistress Shadhra Aliya)

            No report this month.

Arts & Sciences (6/17) (HE Aeron Corrino)

Mistress Laurellen has requested a table and an hour and a half of time for making her presentation at Baronial Banquet.

I have had an inquiry about a Madrone Sewing/Costumer’s guild. I know that such has existed in the past, but I am uncertain if it is currently alive and active. If not, I would like to put out the call to find a leader willing to spearhead driving some enthusiasm and action in this direction.

(Note from Lady Gera: Sewing Guild was dissolved about a year ago due to protracted inactivity.)

To that end, I would also like to solicit a few volunteers to help me create a series of hoods/short mantles for our Madrone Champions so they may opt to show off pride in their barony without necessarily roasting in the existing champion cloaks, which are non-period construction and hotter than hells hinges.

No artisans were harmed in the creation of this report.

·      Baroness Bergdis mentions that some of the new people who are contacting her are very interested in sewing and connecting with folks to help them with their sewing ideas. Also, bringing some new folks in on these projects (hoods and mantles) might be a great idea to (a) give them some greater connection to the Barony, and (b) give a Sewing Guild a purpose.

Branch Marshal (5/15) (Don Enzio Bandinelli)

            No report this month.

Chamberlain (4/17) (HL Karrel der Ertmundigender)

Coordinating to bring things for this weekend as well as A&S in March.      Other than that, if you want to have an event please contact Sgt. Karrel to coordinate as his schedule is very full.

Sgt. Karrel will consult his schedule and pick a date for yearly inventory    and make a call for volunteers.

Chatelaine (6/16)(Baroness Bergdis Thorgrimsdottir)

We had 1 new email inquiry in September. We also had one contact from someone who wants to borrow a suit of armor for a school play. I’ve asked for more detail. We had 6 new members in the meet-up group. I have provided information, and generally encouraged the new contacts to come to a Social as their first activity. We had a few new people at the Baronial Social.I am looking into a possible Newcomer’s night at the social in the next couple of months, and a possible Demo for KapKa School on 10/23/15.

Regarding demo for the school, potentially October 23. Friday. If we have some people who would be available on that date, we would need a fighter, a couple of arts people, doesn’t need to be a big demo. Baroness Bergids will email and post regarding details. Probably an evening demo to avoid work conflicts.
