Curia Minutes 2015-8

Barony of Madrone Curia

Agenda for

August 17, 2015

Call to Order:  7:05pm

B&B Welcome (Baron Stefan of Pembroke/Baroness Emmelina de Coventry)

·      Did go to Pennsic. Did go and have dinner at Chez D’Argent, where they also spoke about the Madrone Culinary Guild. They will be sending some books as well.

·      Had some awards, for those who did not catch it. Lady Alicia received a Jambe de Leon. Eric received an Award of Arms. And Ailianora received a Court Barony.

·      Coming up, Sport of Kings, no “official” Madrone camp going up at Sport of Kings.

·      Sergeantry Trials, Wyewood has candidates (we think two, maybe three). Our Sergeants are going out in great support to help them hold their first Sergeantry Trials. There is also an event going on at the same time, an equestrian event that they put on last year on Sunday, doing it on Saturday this year. Welcome to the potluck dinner that night as well. It will be exciting to see Wyewood gain some Sergeants. (Tournament of the Sable Rose). The equestrian was a lot of fun last year, too.

·      For those who did not catch it, our awesome champion, our bardic champion has been running a series of classes on singing and drumming at the socials. Tonight she is running a sing along event, going on downstairs. Everyone is invited to go own and participate after we have finsiehd with Curia.

Seneschal Welcome and Report (Lady Gera Gangolffin)

·      Things are really quiet.

·      Minutes are now up to date and will be posted approximately one week after each meeting.

·      We will be starting Robert’s Rules of Order with our next meeting, so please review the minutes so that we can pass them at the beginning of our meeting.

Exchequer Report (HL Lianor Pereira DoValle)

·      Next FC meeting

o   Directly following the Curia meeting in September, 2nd Monday in September.

·      Balances:

o   Checking: $ 6,681.92

o   Money Market: $ 17,630.08

Events

Close out

·      7/25: Amtgard joint practice (Iacobo ibn Daoud)

It was basically their regular practice, with a h andful of SCA people showing up. Talked to each other, Enzio was there so they did a little bit of rapier fighting. Not enough heavy fighters do really do any heavy fighting. Talked about food, spinning, artistic and scribal-y things, and Amtgard talked about the things that they do. It was fun.

In Process

·      9/19-20:  Emprise of the Black Lion (Master Guillaume de Garrigues)

o   If you have not seen or received one, the Emprise postcards are ready! They were printed by our very own Temekin. It’s a real block print, and it’s awesome.

o   Main event, the thing that you should make sure you drive down to Kent to go see and be a part of, is the Emprise of the Black Lion Tournament. It has 3 parts. It is the premier equestrian event in An Tir, if not on the West Coast. We have people driving up from Caid to attend this event. Jousting, games of skill, households will introduce themselves, and other such fineries!

o   Judges are Master Charles, Mistress Ann-Marie, Countess Elisabeth, HL ?? (who looks incredible in his German outfits!!!).

o   Also have a Pas d’Arms to choose our Heavy Champion!! Sir Cedric is not competing this year, so we will be having a NEW champion of Maddrone. Wonderful, colorful, exciting, as period as possible set of Pas d’Arm-ing.

o   And we have archery!! York Rounds!! Also an Archery Championship Tournament.

o   Logistical things: we have at least one food truck coming so that you can day trip and get a tasty lunch. Do that.

o   This is a really great spectator event!! You can see much of the equestrian stuff from behind the fence. If someone has never seen the SCA before, it will give them a taste.

Note: the inside of the infield is the event space

o   $10 fee to be in the infield.

       Bleacher seats are fee

o   AND, there will be opportunities for volunteering. Come down the Friday before to help with set up! Gate volunteer opportunities the day of the event. Musicians and heralds also wanted. Also need help tearing down on Sunday. Remember, we may not be able to “rely” on help from our neighbors, as we have in the past. So please come out on Friday to assist. Anytime between 4 and 9 on Friday would be wonderful.

o   Also, remember that everyone at the event is a chatelaine. There will be MANY people wandering around, interested! And, wear your best stuff because the PRESS will be there.

o   Note: this is not a camping event. BUT, we would like to put pavilions up in the infield because (a) we love shade, and (b) we love how pretty pavilions are. If you have a period pavilion that you are willing to let the events stewards use for shade space at the event, please contact Master Guillaume.

o   We also might get coupons this year. It is also a pet store! Save some money on your cat foodJ

o   September Crown—coming up. It’s right around the corner. Invite your friends who you will see there to come to our fabulous event!

o   Party with dancing Saturday night.

·      9/28: A Night along the River Tweed (Lord Renzo Venturius)

o   Entry by donation as a fundraiser to help pay for our “baronial home”.

o   Begins at 7pm. (weather depending, we will EITHER be in the gym or outside)

o   Encouraging the populace to bring PRIZES for the fighters!

o   Heavy prize tourney

o   Rapier Championship will be held, as well!

o   Two speedy side-by-side tourneys.

o   Two courts, and that’s really it.

·      10/17: Madrone Baronial Feast (Baroness Aleksandra Lavrovna)

o   Reservations are open. Payments/reservations are being collected now. Seats are going quickly! About one-third are already GONE!!

o   Menu is largely locked.

o   Ready to go!!

·      03/19/16: As I won’t be able to attend Curia tonight so sending this update in stead

o   The 2016 A&S Championship is scheduled for March 19; Magnolia Lutheran Church has us on their calendar.

o   I will be at September and October Curia.  Next month we’ll do the EIF and start working on other items as needed.

Dance (Lord Ranulf Mirthe)

Buon giorno!

Maitre Guillaume de Garrigues and the Camp Fromage Party Band meet regularly to rehearse on period-style instruments.

July 17th-19th

Coronation

Friday 17th: Camp Fromage Party Band rehearsal. (I presume Master Leith sang and played music throughout the weekend. Sir Martin the Harper was on vigil; I was absent so don’t know if he sang and played Friday.)

Saturday 18th: Ball at the evening Dessert Social. Dances taught and led by Countess Stjarna. Music by Master Guillaume (recorder, rauschpfeiff, swedish pipes) and Camp Fromage Party Band (Mistress Annise, Master Sean, Lord Caravaggio on drums) with Lord Patrick (viola da gamba, fiddle), Mistress Elizabeth Piper (recorders, fiddle), Marcello (cello), Jaclyn (recorders), HL Ranulf Mirthe (recorders).

Failed to ask names of other fiddler, two other drummers; my apologies.

July 25th

Joint Exercise with Amtgard, Marymoor Park (Porte de l’Eau?)

Dance led by Lauithrend (planned, but Luaithrend was unable to attend)

Aug 8th

Wyewood Champions

From Jorunn Allaksdottir:

“We had one lone musician (me) play right before and right after evening court, and during the following feast.  The other two regulars were out of town.

In fact, I too was out of town in the morning.  Hurried back from Whidbey Island to make sure Wyewood’s big day of competition and camaraderie did not go completely tuneless.  I played Celtic harp, soprano and alto recorder, and blokkfløyte; dance music, Celtic tunes, and Norse folk songs.”

Upcoming:

Aug 10th

Bardic sing-along with our Bardic Champion

Aug 29th

Sound Sergeantry Trials and Emprise of Sable Rose

Sept 18-20

Emprise of the Black Lion

Good luck with your projects, and I hope this finds you and your loved ones happy and healthy.

Sincerely,

HL Ranulf Mirthe

The current focus is on preparing for the Emprise of the Black Lion XIV, September 19, 2015 at Reber Ranch in Kent, which promises to be another fabulous Madrone event.

Pewter (Master Sean O’Conner)

Archery (Mistress Shadhra Aliya)

Arts & Sciences (6/17) (HE Aeron Corrino)

A&S report:

I regret I will not be attending, I’m feeling a bit under the weather and am not going to spread this late summer cold around.

My report is a bit lean for two reasons:

1-like their Excellencies, I was at Pennsic and thus did not have my finger on the pulse of Madrone’s Arts And Sciences community for a chunk of this past month.

2- I need to get the various guild heads (Equestrian, Pewterers, Scribal…) and Port D’Leau ‘s A&S officer to forward me reports so that I have them for reference when making my report as well as for the Quarterly report to the Kingdom A&S office. If each of these designated leaders of these groups could forward their report a few days prior to Curia each month it would be greatly appreciated. They may send them to ” aeroncorrino202@yahoo.com

All of that being said: by no means were the arts left untended or unrepresented while members of the Barony headed off to Pennsic:

The Culinary Guild continues apace at reconstructions in anticipation of both Baronial Banquet (See Sara to make sure your reservations are firmly in place as this will be a meal you will not want to miss) and The Kingdom Feast out in Ocean Shores, which our guild will be crafting one of the removes for. They continue to hold Monthly video nights where they watch and discuss a video lecture series on the history of cooking and culinary technique throughout various cultures and time periods. For anyone interested in participating in any or all of these activities, either email me at the above listed address and I will put you in contact with Ysolt, or reach out to her, the guild head, directly.

I am presuming that the absence of reports of either fires started by blast furnaces gone amuck or stampedes of horses maddened by improper barding are indicative of continued industrious labor within the Pewterers Guild and Equestrian Guild with Emprise of the Black Lion fast approaching

And as ever the Fromage Band have continued to support both kingdom and more local events with their artistry in presenting period music, to the delight of the period dance enthusiasts .

On a more mechanical note: with changes coming for Port D’ Leau regarding their standing meeting schedule in conjunction with the fighter practice on Fridays, there will be alteration to the A&S activities that regularly took place there too. Ysolt is working with several people to re-establish a regular gathering of east siders to work on projects together and hold class sessions too. Hopefully the beginning plan that our A&S champion and I hatched earlier this summer can evolve to offset and support this new growth in PDL, as we will endeavor to make it do so.

Plans continue to evolve for the upcoming A&S championship in March.

That covers the topics I have to report on. Again if the various guild heads and PDL A&S officer could please begin forwarding me their reports it would be greatly appreciated. Also if they are in need of any assistance facilitating any upcoming activities please contact Me and I will do everything I can to help or find you the right help.

Branch Marshal (5/15) (Don Enzio Bandinelli)

Fighting Continues, No Injuries People sign Wavers.  Numbers do fluctuate quite                           a bit on Monday night practices.

            –Don Enzio

Chamberlain (4/17) (HL Karrel der Ertmundigender)

·      We have property

·      Talking with emprise about loaning property.

Chatelaine (6/16)(Baroness Bergdis Thorgrimsdottir)

We had 3 new email or Facebook inquiries in July, all brand new. We also had 10 new members in the meet-up group. I have provided information, and generally encouraged the new contacts to come to a Social (Madrone or Porte de l’Eau) as their first activity. We had a few new people at the Month Baronial Social, and several new people at Peasant’s Revel, who were welcomed in court. We also held a joint practice with the local branch of Amtgard in July. There was limited participation, but it was positive, and both groups shared information and interests. We may do this more.

Family Activities Coordinator (3/17)(Madelena Vieri)

July activity:

Herald (6/16) (Lady Matilda Stoyle)

Lists (HL Rowena D’ath-fhirdia)

Youth Armored Combat Marshal (Lady Sara Pixie)

Rapier (12/15) (HL Renzo di Venturius)

·      Fighting continues, no injuries to report, attendance is down to an average of 4 at the Monday night practices, but steady at around 9 at the Wednesdays. We had one new authorization (which the lazy marshal needs to scan and submit), and there was one incident of equipment failure ( a blown out Darkwood tip—no injuries).

·      I would like to begin soliciting candidates for a rapier deputy (to be replacement).

·      A Night Along the River Tweed fast approaches. I encourage the populace to attend and bring prizes for the fighters. Hopefully I will run into our exchequer and fill out a gate money check request, tonight. Otherwise, this event looks ready to roack!

Thank you,

HL Ranzo di Venturius

Scribe (6/16) (HL Rignach of Argyll)

Lady Rignach of Argyll is largely out of town until Emprise, so any scribal business should be directed to Lady Madelena Vieri, Deputy Baronial Scribe.

Projects:
Reframing Madrone Charter – Step One : Fix seal on old charter. Update: The king has been added into the loop and it seems a new seal will be organized between our Baron and the King. Project remains on hold until a seal gets to us.

Scribal Night:
Date & Time: The scribal night is happening the first & third Mondays; generally a class on the first and painting table on the third during the baronial social. The next meeting is August 17th. Location is the KapKa school, co-located where fight practice.

Charters: We received four painted charters in July. Please return to me anything you have outstanding, even unfinished work. We are trying to amass enough Baronial charters to cover both the Emprise *AND* Banquet because they are too close together for work to occur between.

Scroll Assignments:
Event steward scrolls have been assigned for Peasants’ Revel, Emprise, Baronial Banquet, and the Madrone Arts & Sciences Competiton.

Current Stock: Estimated needs for the next three events. No production occurred over the Nov-Dec holidays last year, none is projected this year.
Tsvetis: Have 6, Need 8-10 Total
Green Leafs: Have 13, Need 10-12 Total
Gwraidds: Have 8, Need 2 Total

Estoile: Have 2
Book marks: Have 0, Need 12 total
Thank Yous: Have 0, Need 4 total

Classes and Attendance:
July 20th: Seven scribes painted at the baronial social.

July 25th: Joint practice with Amtgard had a very active scribal table. Three Madrone and four Amtgard scribes did quite a bit of painting bookmarks and discussing how the scribal arts are approached in each group, and several others stopped by to see and hear what we do.

August 3rd: Sarra the Brave hosted a painting table in the baronial space as both baronial officers were out of town.

Office Materials:
Purchased: No purchases made in July

Still Needed:
Framing for Madrone Charter and Scribal Regalia
Droppers
Black wax melting/pouring pot (using coke can for now)
Box to contain all the seal making elements – needs to be heavy duty enough to contain the cast iron griddle, all the wax, matrix, poured seals, melting pots, tools, and foils.
Archival storage for past reign charters & masters – looking at portfolios and acid free boxes. So far, these seem expensive solutions.

July Goals:
Build up an inventory of charters ready to be signed and sealed (In Progress)
Get approval for continued work on Framing projects – (In Progress)
Train deputy on sealing charters (In progress)
Get Super Secret Squirrel Project finished (In Progress)

August Goals:
