What is a Chatelaine?

Are you excited about recruiting and supporting new people as they learn about the Society? Do you have ideas how to get the word out and help interested people get involved? 

In the SCA, the Chatelaine is the officer responsible for welcoming and integrating newcomers into the organization by providing information, answering questions, and helping them find loaner clothing and equipment for their first events. This role acts as the primary point of contact to help new members feel comfortable and connected, thereby ensuring the society’s growth and the retention of new participants.

Why the Role is Important

A steady stream of new members is vital for the continued health and survival of the SCA, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the organization.

The Chatelaine’s efforts in connecting and assisting newcomers directly contributes to their comfort and active participation in the society.

Volunteering as the Chatelaine for your Barony is a fantastic way to serve your Kingdom! You are helping guide newcomers along the first steps of their journey in the SCA!

The new Chatelaine will be working with the outgoing Chatelaine, in preparation for taking the position in January of 2026, and training will be provided. You do not need any experience to take on this role. Just a love for the SCA and a desire to help!

Demos, new member contact, and socialization is your venue!  You can work closely with the chronicler, social media officer, and webster to provide helpful information and resources to our newest participants!  You don’t need to be a long-time participant to apply.  

There are multiple resources to help you with this office, including previous officers, kingdom and society websites, as well as a wealth of prepared materials that you can leverage.  There’s even an SCA-wide Known World Chatelaine Symposium on December 30th of this year! 

It is highly recommended that this officer attends the baronial socials, local events, and is very active on social media (Facebook/Instagram/Discord) for the Barony.  This office has a deputy to assist with Gold Key (loaner garb). 

This office reports newcomer engagement and activities at the monthly Baronial Business meeting and quarterly to their Kingdom officer.
